DC officially announces "Before Watchmen"

In a move that is undoubtedly both controversial and exciting, DC Entertainment has officially announced a new prequel series to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal comic book series work "WATCHMEN". Unified under the banner entitled "BEFORE WATCHMEN", seven prequel miniseries will be released that will tell tales that exist within the Watchmen universe, and will feature the likes of J. Michael Straczynski, Andy Kubert, Brian Azzarello, and Darwyn Cooke.

The titles to be released are as follows:

RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo

MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke

COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones

DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes

NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert

There will also be a back up story in the form of CURSE OF THE CRIMSON CORSAIR, which runs for two-pages at the end of every issue released. After all is said and done, a single issue called BEFORE WATCHMEN: EPILOGUE will be released, and will also feature a Crimson Corsair back up. Turning 38 years old this day, the British actor best known for his role as Bruce Wayne/ Batman sees his latest and final bow as The Caped Crusader later this year when "The Dark Knight Rises" shows in theaters this July 20th, and he's also earned an Academy for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "The Fighter" last 2010. For all his achievements in the last 25 years since he started acting, Bale has been a recognizable force in the acting and Hollywood community. Many happy returns, good sir!

This news is just as surprising to hear as the winner of this year's Royal Rumble, but it's a bit of a curveball all things considered.

It has officially been confirmed by World Wrestling Entertainment that legendary boxing champion and pop culture icon "Iron" Mike Tyson will be inducted into the 2012 class of the WWE Hall of Fame! To be held in Miami Florida at the American Airlines Arena, and a day before Wrestlemania XXVIII, Iron Mike will be inducted alongside other legends and icons from the WWE Universe, such as Edge and The Four Horsemen. And while some questions may linger as to why a boxer is getting added to WWE's HOF lineup, there's good reason why Mike Tyson was chosen.

The Dark Knight Rises DC Direct Toyline pics hit the web

Via blogsite Idle Hands and through posts by Comic Book Movie and Batman-News, the first images of DC Direct's official toyline based on Christopher Nolan's upcoming final Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" has leaked on the web, showing off statues, busts, and figurines based on Batman, Bane, and Catwoman (played by Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and Anne Hathaway respectively). Not due to be revealed until the New York Toy Fair next month, these pics show clearly how the figures will look, some obviously still prototypes and subject to changes at the moment.

While we all know how Batman and Bane look like in the movie, but this is the first real time we see a close up "official" look of Anne Hathaway's appearance as Selina Kyle/ Catwoman in toy form. It's a pity that it doesn't take after the modern comic look of the character, but it certainly pays tribute to the 60's Batman TV Series look, which was performed by acting legend Julie Newman. It literally looks like a typical "Cat Burglar" mixed with a "Ballroom Mask" motif, and hopefully we'll learn why this is the case when the movie arrives later this year. Liam Neeson confirms his appearance in The Dark Knight Rises

Consider this a MAJOR SPOILER as you read, but you probably know it was bound to happen anyway, and here be the proof...

It's been long speculated among Batman fans that legendary actor Liam Neeson will reprise his role as Henri Ducard/ Ra's Al Ghul. Now, via Comic Book Movie and Showbiz Spy, there may be credence to those whispers, as Neeson himself has confirmed that he was on the set of the third and final batflick directed by Christopher Nolan!

In an interview with Showbiz Spy, Liam was quoted to say the following:

"I can tell you nothing about Dark Knight Rises, seriously. I was on set for maybe an hour-and-a-half and the director didn’t tell me anything of what it’s about. So, I’m being very honest when I say I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

With that said, it's a very likely and obvious possibility that Liam Neeson will reprise his role as Ra's Al Ghul via flashbacks, mentoring a young Bane (Tom Hardy) perhaps or raising a young daughter Talia Al Ghul, who was recently confirmed to be played by young actress Joey King. The latter role however hasn't been confirmed to be linked to Maria Cotillard's role as Miranda Tate (who may be an alias for an older Talia), but the fact that Liam is back in some capacity is great news, even when fellow actor Josh Pence was cast as a younger version of his character Ra's.

Batman Begins - The Will To Act
In the end, things come full circle for Nolan's films. Liam Neeson returns to his role as Ra' Al Ghul from Batman Begins. He was the man who inspired Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) to become a "Legend", and gave him a path and the means to eventually assume his role as Batman. Australian actor Sam Worthington has a busy year ahead of him.

In addition to reprising his role as Perseus in "Wrath of the Titans", the "Avatar" and "Terminator: Salvation" star will be playing the character Nick Cassidy, a fugitive on the run and claiming his innocence by attempting to jump off a building while his brother makes a big heist that will prove his innocence. The film also stars Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, and Ed Harris. Happy Chinese New Year, one and all! Celebrations officially begin today to welcome the year of the water dragon, and festivities around the world see reading of fortunes and happy people taking time to gather together in honor of this momentous occasion! In my mind, however, we also celebrate the astrological time of the year when one superb and legendary martial artist was born. He was called Lei Seil Loong or "The Little Dragon", and it may not be familiar to most people at first, but you know him better by his American and Screen name... BRUCE LEE.

With 6 months to go just before The Dark Knight Rises arrives in theaters and Christopher Nolan ends his Batman film run with a bang, the interwebz has stumbled onto and unearthed one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film: the name of the new vehicle Batman will use in his war against crime. Via Comic Book Movie and CinemaBlend, the question has been addressed and answered, through the most uncanny yet somewhat obvious source, and before anything gets revealed after the jump, consider this a BIG SPOILER for anyone trying to shy away from information and keep pure until the movie gets released this July. With that said, here we go...

Thanks to Wireless Goodness, FCC filings for Hot Wheels toys that are apparently for The Dark Knight Rises clearly show the name of the flying vehicle, and it is going to be called "The Bat". Take a moment to breath and use that in a sentence, and Batman fans will probably find the conundrum right there. For years, we've called every flying vehicle The Caped Crusader has ever used as the "Bat-Wing" or "Batcopter", but simply being called "The Bat" will get some people confused, especially when it's a name criminals use to describe Batman himself and not one of his rides. Probably it has an official codename like the Tumbler (which was never officially called "The Batmobile" in any of the previous Batman films), and only the Bat-Pod got called its name by Alfred in The Dark Knight. Well, we'll just have to wait and see how "The Bat" earned its moniker when the film officially arrives in theaters. The Walking Dead Season 3 gets 16 episodes!

Announced by AMC at the Television Critics Association (TCA) last Saturday, and posted in several sites like Comic Book Movie and Superherohype, AMC's third season of their popular survival horror series The Walking Dead will be getting 16 episodes! In addition to revealing a new promo poster that reminds viewers that the 13 episode strong Season 2 will resume with Episode 8 on February 12, the channel has also stated that their international broadcast partner, Fox International Channels, will be following the 16 episode order for Season 3.

AMC announced today from the Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour in Pasadena, CA that the third season of The Walking Dead will consist of 16 episodes. Previous season orders were for 13 episodes. AMC's international broadcast partner FOX International Channels (FIC) will follow the 16 episode order and structure a similar schedule worldwide. Green Arrow to star in own TV Series; Will appear in Justice League #8!

Oliver Queen is striking back this week with a vengeance, and with good reason too.

The DC Comics' superhero better known as "Green Arrow" has been making the waves lately, with two news bits that have been circulating around the interwebz. First off, the hero has been pegged for a TV Series by The CW, the same network that aired the pre-Superman series "Smallville". Justin Hartley played a version of the character in the latter show, but there's no word out whether or not he'll be reprising that role, or when the series will get the greenlight to be done. Take note, this is just a network expressing interest, and it could be some time until we hear anything concrete and official.

The second bit of news related to the Emerald Archer is what you see above - Green Arrow finally makes his New 52 Justice League debut in issue #8, with Geoff Johns and Carlos D'Anda (Batman: Arkham City) doing the introductions. Main artist and DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee will be taking a break from art duties starting with issue #6, but he'll be returning in full force on issue #9. After the unveiling of their newest issue featuring Christian Bale as Batman in the cover, Entertainment Weekly has released brand new photos and details online on Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan's final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises! Via Batman-News.com and EW itself, new pics have appeared giving fans a sneak peek of what's to come later this year. Above is a very nice shot of Bale as Bruce Wayne, standing beside his Batsuit as he contemplates his next move against his new adversary - Bane (played by Tom Hardy).

Below are some more selected shots, featuring Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and Bane himself.

Also, new plot details have emerged, as featured in Batman-News and EW. Here they are as follows (SPOILERS):

- Taking place 8 years after The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne is still recovering from his injuries, both physical and mental, sustained from his battles with The Joker and the tragic fall of his friend, Harvey Dent.

- The Batcave returns, as does the newly restored Wayne Manor. The Batsuit has been secured in a new plastic cabinetry that rises from the water next to the lake and waterfall in the cave.

- Bruce Wayne must also repair his relationships with his trusted friends, Alfred and Lucius Fox.

If you're a fan of video games and everything that dates back to the 80's and the good ol' NES (Nintendo Entertainment System, or Famicom in Japan), then you truly owe it to yourself to check out this awesome piece of video game nostalgia - Abobo's Big Adventure. As the title implies, it stars none other than that big hunk of mass and muscle from the Double Dragon games, who's out to look for his lost son that's been kidnapped by the bad guys. As you'd expect, nobody messes with Abobo, and this game is a labor of love by fans of these types of games, who have programmed it to be just more than a simple side-scrolling beat 'em up game. Expect all kinds of gameplay that any NES fan will remember, from Super Mario Bros. to Legend of Zelda to Punch Out, and see all the kinds of mischief and mayhem one big dumb lovable guy will go through to save his offspring, with every kind of popculture reference and achievement to boot! Japan's Life-Sized RX-78-2 Gundam returns in April 19!

Mobile Suit Gundam has endured for many years since its introduction to Japan and the world with the original series in April of 1979. Since then the universe that began with Universal Century has expanded immensely, and several other spin-off titles have been created, garnering countless fans across the globe who admire the military science fiction drama and action the series possesses.

A couple of years ago, a life-sized model of the original Gundam, the RX-78-2 found in Mobile Suit Gundam and piloted by Newtype Amuro Ray, was first erected in Odaiba, Japan in July 2009. It moved to Shizuoka the following year, and some disassembled parts were donated to a charity drive following the great earthquake in Japan in 2011. Now, the large model of the original Gundam is set to return, with a grand opening on April 19 this year. Since it's already up, some time lapse videos have been released by one darwinfish105.

First Look: Batman # 8 and the Court of Owls back-up!

Announced in DC Comics' official blog The Source, here is a first look at what's coming in a few months time with Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque's epic DC The New 52 run on Batman. Starting with issue #8, a new back-up feature will be included in the series, entitled "The Secret History of The Court of Owls", focusing on the society that has been hounding The Dark Knight and his home Gotham City. It will lead to a mega crossover called "The Night of The Owls" The roots of the group extend longer than Batman realizes, and how it connects to the Wayne family's own history will be explored as the series progresses, particularly when issue #9 rolls around, starting a new arc called "The Fall of the House of Wayne". First Look: The Bourne Legacy Teaser Poster and First Pic!

Starring Jeremy Renner of Hurt Locker, upcoming Avengers, and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol fame as new rogue agent and lead Aaron Cross, as he and the rest of his costars (Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz included) are thrown into a web of conspiracy that has further been provoked by the actions of Jason Bourne in the previous films. Since it hit the web in December, the official theatrical trailer of The Dark Knight Rises has generated a lot of buzz, comments, and "creative output", with the latter taking shape in the form of "parodies" that mix and match parts from the trailer. Streaming through You Tube and being posted in other news blog sites, there have been several new trailers that combine footage from other well known things from the pop culture spectrum, and the end result is just awesomeness personified. Take a look at what has been trending so far.

The Lion King Rises - Simba faces his bane in the form of Scar. A good remix using a classic Disney animated tale.

The Jinchuriki of Kyubi Rises - Naruto dukes it out with Sasuke in epic Batman parody style fashion.

Released in conjunction with one another since the past day via DC Comics' official blog The Source, here is a first look at two of the most highly anticipated and much awaited graphic novels this year: Batman: Earth One and Superman: Earth One Vol. 2!

Written by acclaimed scribe Geoff Johns and illustrated by the talented Gary Frank, Batman: Earth One serves as Johns' first original graphic novel work, and explores a contemporary look at the origins and beginnings of The Dark Knight. In this story, Batman isn't yet the master detective or watchful protector he is known through legend, and instead we see a Bruce Wayne who is still making mistakes and trying to adjust to a world where shades of gray dominate the society of Gotham City. Once again written by J. Michael Straczynski and drawn by Shane Davis, Superman: Earth One Vol. 2 is the long awaited sequel to one of the best original graphic novels of 2010, once again exploring a younger version of the Man of Steel as he tries to find his place in the world. Now that he has finally become Superman, Clark Kent has to find out where his alter ego fits in, especially with the world watching and wondering what his true purpose will be. As he starts to put his life in check, he becomes mixed up with a certain girl next door, and as Lois Lane tries to snoop around Clark's mysteries, a new threat comes in the form of the deadly Parasite. Considering the immense popularity of western comics, it comes as no surprise that characters from the rich history of DC Comics would some form or way get considered for a Japanese styled anime/ tokusatsu treatment. Back in the 70's, Marvel's own webslinging hero Spider-Man got turned into a Tokusatsu TV series, and the House of Ideas even released some miniseries some years back using Manga styled drawings. DC almost gave the greenlight to that approach, but sadly it did not come to pass. Thankfully, io9 has put up some concept art of the proposals via Project Rooftop, as illustrated by one Cliff Chiang. You can take a look at them via i09, and check out how heroes like Batman, Superman, Aquaman, and The Flash are drawn very much similar to Gatchaman, Mazinger Z, Ultraman, and Racer X!

Via a scoop at Bleeding Cool and reported by Comic Book Movie, DC Comics and Marvel are going to team up to produce a new 12 issue comic book series that sees The Dark Knight cross paths with your friendly neighborhood Webslinger! Entitled "Spider-Man/Batman", the series will depict the crimefighters interacting with each other through the years, starting with their very first meeting on the 48 page debut issue coming out in April, and eventually spreading out to other adventures through the course of their respective careers. Of course, this isn't the first time the heroes have interacted with one another, as Marvel and DC have made both heroes star in team up books and crossover stories in the 90's (as pictured above). Also, since The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man are coming out in theaters this year, it's the perfect time for Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker to fight together to blend in with the hype! The Dark Knight Rises: Bane's voice being improved for the movie

UPDATE: CBM reports that Warner Bros. has debunked the rumors, and there is "no truth" to the new audio mix news.

Via a report from Collider as well as a story posted at Comic Book Movie, it appears that a lot of the feedback and comments given towards the near inaudibility of Bane's voice in The Dark Knight Rises has been addressed, as new reels of the TDKR Prologue introducing the villain (played by Tom Hardy) are now reportedly "clearer" and much easier to understand. A new audio recording has reportedly been sent, making it much easier to understand Bane as he talks without the background noise drowning the dialogue away. Not much else to say regarding the matter, but this is definitely good news for those who didn't understand and took issue to the voice. Remembering Great Things About 2011!

As we approach the end of 2011 and the beginning of a new year, I can't think of anything better or appropriate to describe my wishes for 2012 other than this simple panel from the Batman Adventures Holiday Special issue, featuring a quiet and tender discussion between two old friends of justice, The Dark Knight Batman and Police Commissioner James Gordon.

Seriously though, it's time for an annual list of popculture related things I found memorable within the year, and boy are there a lot to enumerate. Next year still ushers in The Dark Knight Rises, but this year also had big moments for the Caped Crusader, and he'll be featured extensively as I go on. Here goes some of the stuff I found so memorable for 2011.

COMICS: DC The New 52

Yes the big reboot. Call me biased or a sucker for Jim Lee's artistic talents, but I do love it when a plan, or in this case big gamble comes together, and 2011 saw the relaunch of the DC Universe in a somewhat new and unexpected way. Sure, it divided the comic continuity in a way where they weren't sure how taking the undies would make a difference, but it certainly sold numbers by the record, highlighted by the dominance of the publisher's flagship team-up title, Justice League, which is written by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. Other nods go to Scott Snyder's Batman run, Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman's Animal Man, and Grant Morrison's take on a younger Superman in Action Comics. Those books fared well. There are titles that have their flaws though, such as ones that treat heroines like sex objects (Starfire in Red Hood and the Outlaws) and books that readers fail to grasp like The Fury of Firestorm, but it's only been 5 months since the relaunch as of this writing, and it would be unfair to lay judgement right away without seeing a full year of this gamble take its course. So yes, 2011 in comics definitely was highlighted by DC The New 52. It was a big year indeed.

GAMES: Batman: Arkham City

Best. Comic. Book. Video. Game. Sequel. Ever. If you thought 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum was a sophisticated and brilliant piece of work, this will blow you off the edge, much like how Christopher Nolan raised his bar by making The Dark Knight an even better movie sequel to Batman Begins! The Dark Knight reigned supreme in 2011 in terms of comics and games alright. Just wait til 2011 for the epic conclusion to Nolan's Batman universe!

TV SHOW: Game Of Thrones

I'd be lying if I said The Walking Dead Season 2 was my favorite pick of this year. No, that honor goes to HBO's live action TV series adaptation of George R.R Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, using the title of the first book of the series as its name - "Game of Thrones". As the name implies, the series evokes a world where chivalry is all but dead and treachery and conspiracy run rampant, as different factions fight and battle one another for the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms, not knowing what evil is slowly crawling out of the shadows. Martin has been called the "Modern J.R.R Tolkien", so that's saying a lot, plus Sean "Boromir" Bean of The Lord of The Rings fame is here as Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell... How can you go wrong with epic here?!

MOVIES: X-Men First Class

Frankly, it was a toss between this and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but you can't go wrong with a formula that brings a classic Marvel superhero franchise together with an excellent cast and a near flawless script. The fact that this movie begs to be a semi-reboot of the X-Men film series bolds well for the franchise, and James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender outperformed themeselves as Charles Xavier and Magneto, leading to the birth of the "FassAvoy" and "McBender" era of internet memes. Actually, the origin also got accepted and embraced somewhat into mainstream Marvel continuity, so how's that for a domino effect. Definitely, X-Men First Class deserves the top spot for my movie of 2011!

ANIMATED MOVIE: Batman: Year One

Yes. This one takes the cake for perfectly adapting one of the most recognizable and seminal works of DC Comics, not to mention one of the series that returned Batman back to his darker roots. If you haven't watched this DC Animated Movie feature, I implore you to do so!

Anyone a fan of Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3? Prepare to receive a new update that will add more gameplay madness to the fighting game craziness!

R.I.P Joe Simon. A Legend and Star Spangled Avenger of comics.

Another legendary icon in the comic book industry passes away, and now that's two stars who have gone to a better place.

By way of Comic Book Movie, famed comic book writer, artist, editor and publisher Joe Simon, best known as the co-creator of the iconic Marvel Comics' character Captain America, passed away this December 14 at the age of 98. This is sad news to bear, especially after last week's news on the passing of Jerry Robinson, creator of The Joker and another legend in the comic industry.

As a legend in the industry, Simon is well known for his time in Timely Comics (which would become the future Marvel Comics), where he became the company's first editor. He teamed up with the late great Jack Kirby, and went on to create some of the best stories and characters known in comics, among them being the patriotic hero and star-spangled avenger himself, Captain America. Joe also teamed up with Kirby during their tenure on DC Comics, where they would go on to do work on Sandman and co-create the Newsboy Legion. They were pioneers in the field of romance and horror comics, and Joe would also found the satirical magazine series "Sick", which began in the 1960's and last until the 1980's, which was well after his departure from the magazine in the 1970's. His death comes a week after Robinson's, and this is really sad news for fans of his works. However, it's fortunate he was able to see the character he helped co-create get the newest big screen live action film treatment, with this past July's release of Captain America: The First Avenger.

Via IGN and Enewsi, Marvel and Disney have released two new banner posters for their 2012 superhero team flick, The Avengers! Similar to the ones they've posted before, this new set features new poses for Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and a few others, which can be viewed below.

Via Comic Book Movie, Colombia Pictures has released a new poster of Nicholas Cage's new Ghost Rider film, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Once again reprising his role as the cursed motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, he must once again ride into adventure as his hell spawn alter ego, protecting the lives of a mother and child while facing a new dark threat bent on destroying them. Check out the poster itself, featuring the rider riding and dishing out some hellfire justice.

The film recently premiered at Harry Knowles annual "Butt-Numb-A-Thon" over at the states, and early reviews were generally unfavorable. It won't be until next year still anyway, but that's not a good sign at all. Also, I just recently found out that this IS NOT a sequel to the 2007 Ghost Rider, and as the wikipedia states, a whole new origin sequence will be filmed. It's been a while since I've posted anything on WWE, but today is a good day as any, as a well known and beloved superstar makes his long awaited return!

In last night's episode of WWE Monday Night Raw (December 12, 2011), Kane, the Big Red Machine himself, made his comeback during the highlight match of the night between John Cena and Mark Henry. The latter wrestler and WWE Smackdown's reigning World Heavyweight Champion put The Undertaker's brother out for five months, and since then nobody has heard from the Big Red Monster... until now. December is a big month for fans of Christopher Nolan and Batman. It heralds the release of the much anticipated prologue of "The Dark Knight Rises" with IMAX screenings of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. It also saw the rise of the viral marketing campaign for the movie by Warner Bros, plotting down clues and various interactive material for fans to decipher in order to learn information related to the movie (and in the case of Operation: Early Bird, the locations of early screenings of the prologue).

Now, as mentioned months before and to probably usher in the debut of the new trailer sometime this month, Warner Bros. has released the newest poster for The Dark Knight Rises, and it signals the coming of Bane (played by Tom Hardy), and the end of an era that started in 2005 and skyrocketed with an awesome sequel in 2008. Take a look at the one sheet!

Very nice, and it echoes the promise of Bane "breaking the bat" ala the classic Batman storyline "Knightfall", where The Dark Knight's spine was broken by the brute. Spike VGA 2011 results: Big winners and announcements rocked the show!

As with all Video Game related events, the Spike Video Game Awards 2011 went big and fast. In addition to the nominations and awardees of the most epic and absolute video games out this year, gamers got a taste of things to come with announcements, trailers, and the like! Read some highlights I found awesome from the event after the jump!

Of course, nabbing the "Best Adventure Game" Award category was none other than my (biased) pick for the year, Batman: Arkham City, outshining Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Uncharted 3: Drake's Fortune, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. A good feat and well-deserved accomplishment for Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady Studios, whom I must say have crafted the ULTIMATE Batman sequel and experience yet for fans and gamers out there!

The game has also received awards for "Best Adapted Video Game" and "Character of the Year", with the latter award going to The Joker, voiced by the legendary Mark Hamill (aka Luke Skywalker), who's been voicing the role for almost 20 years since Batman: The Animated Series, and has since retired from it after performing such a successful run with The Clown Prince of Crime!

Of course, taking the "Game of the Year" Award was Bethesda Game Studios' baby Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim... A game that needs no explanation as to why it won out. It simply is the rage and the ultimate gaming experience out there now, with no hope for a life if you're addicted to it. Heck, Bethesda also got the "Studio of the Year" Award, and that really says something.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Trailer

While it didn't nail any outstanding awards, the latest Assassin's Creed took the "Gametrailers Trailer of the Year" Award, and there's a good reason why. If you haven't seen that, it's embedded in the player above. Uncharted 3 took home the Best PS3 Game Award, while NetherRealm Studios nabbed the "Best Fighting Game" trophy with the new and improved "Mortal Kombat"! Besides the awards of course, there were announcements and new trailers to be found. Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear fame made the big announcement regarding "Metal Gear Rising". Platinum Games, the studio behind Bayonetta, are the one in charges of devloping the game, while Kojima's own Kojima Productions will produce it. In fact, prior to the announcement about that fact, Kojima had a funny introduction to share, showing that he is still the beloved creator and video game guy we all know and love.:D

What perked my interest though, was the next game Naughty Dog (the studio behind the Uncharted series) would bring...

Yes, that's the title of the game, and it's a survival horror title with zombies! It looks mighty awesome from the trailer alone, so just see it and judge for yourselves!

Yes, this particular viral marketing campaign event launched by Warner Bros. is simply giving off locations worldwide where viewers can catch the 6 minute prologue of "The Dark Knight Rises". The countdown at www.operationearlybird.com has expired, and in its place is a map ala google maps that you can use in conjunction with the numbers broadcasted at www.thedarkknightrises.com to find out locations of said IMAX theaters near your area (at random though).

This is kind of a letdown as I was expecting a new theatrical trailer of TDKR instead, but I hear that one wil be premiering soon enough, and it's clocked in at the 2:06 mark. Stay tuned for more updates, and visit the sites above for more on the Viral Marketing Campaign.

Sad news just hit today, and for those who love all things Batman and everything related to his greatest arch-nemesis, The Joker, it's time to pause for a moment and remember a true legend in the world of comics.

Jerry Robinson, the man who is credited for the creation of The Clown Prince of Crime, passed away in his sleep at the age of 89 this Thursday, December 8. Blogsite NYC Graphic Novelists was the first to break the story, and soon many other comic book websites, including Newsarama and Comic Book Resources, followed with reports soon after.

Having been working comics since he was 17 years old, Robinson first broke ground by working on Batman comics, eventually coming up with the concept of The Joker, who first appeared in Batman #1 in Spiring 1940, who would go on to become Batman's greatest foe and The Dark Knight's worst enemy. The artist also worked alongside Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster of Superman fame in the 1970's, and helped them gain credit for their creation of The Man of Steel, as well as being an avid supporter of cartoonists worldwide.

Thanks to his contributions in Batman, thousands of readers and fans have gotten the best possible bad guy to reflect why the Caped Crusader does what he does - to protect people from an insane and sociopathic individual who literally became what he is because of a bad day. The Joker, even after undergoing through so many transformations and interpretations through the years, has remained the most menacing and memorable villain in the history of comics and beyond. Even his portrayals in mediums such as cartoons and movies remain faithful to Robinson's creation, with Mark Hamill lending his voice to the character since Batman: The Animated Series (and recently retiring a few months ago), and stars like Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger delivering sheer excellence with their interpretations of the clown in the 1989 Batman film and 2008's The Dark Knight respectively.

Truly, we owe a debt of gratitude and respect to Jerry Robinson, and his legacy will always live on in the hearts of readers and fans alike. The Dark Knight Rises Viral Marketing Begins

Back in 2007, months before "The Dark Knight" was released in theaters on July 2008, Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan took teasing and fan interaction to the next level by introducing various "viral marketing campaigns". Every one of them, while fictional, purposely served as a cryptic clues and lead ons to the actual movie, ranging from mini online games to actual puzzles and scavenger hunts that sent fans on a solving frenzy, rewarding them in return with scribbles and downright amusing stuff (one reward in particular being the first official image of the late Heath Ledger as The Joker). Now, the legacy continues, as Nolan's next and final Batman film preps up to do the same!

As of today, "The Dark Knight Rises" has now officially started its viral marketing campaign, beginning with a CIA Bulletin that was posted on Wired and features the profile of one Dr. Leonid Pavel (played by Alon Abutbul), and then another on Empire featuring a document that has a transcript of a conversation between a Militia man and a mysterious CIA Staff member.

What these mean and how it relates to the overall plot of TDKR is anybody's guess. More clues are surely on the way... so let the speculation begin for now. Those of you lucky enough (or unlucky depending on your expectations) to see the final episode and season of Smallville saw Tom Welling "complete the circle" and don the familiar red, blue, and yellow tights that signify his transformation into Superman. While we all thought that was done and put to rest, apparently the adventure will still continue... But NOT in television that is.

Coming from a report at Bleeding Cool and Comic Book Movie, it appears that a new novel is being prepped and dubbed as "the 11th season" for Smallville, picking up where the series was supposed to have ended, where (SPOILER) Chloe Sullivan tells the story of Superman to her son, and Clark races to the rooftop of the Daily Planet and prepares to save the day. It's a similar move done by Buffy The Vampire Slayer (in which continued with Season 8 and 9 in comic book form), and well-known Batgirl and DC Relaunch writer Bryan Q. Miller is set to handle the novel duties, and it will be part of continuity. How the further adventures of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Oliver Queen, and Chloe Sullivan goes is anybody's guess, but it's safe to say that fans of the show will be picking this one up when it comes out. Peter "Robocop" Weller joins Star Trek 2 cast!

You knew him as "The Future of Law Enforcement", and he played the role for two movies. Now, via a report from Variety and Comic Book Movie, actor Peter Weller has been added to the cast of J.J. Abrams' next Star Trek Movie!

A veteran actor, thespian, and director, Weller, 64, is best known for his role as officer Alex Murphy/ Robocop, in the 1987 sci-fi cult classic film of the same name. Like recent addition Alice Eve, details about Weller's role in the next Trek film are still under wraps, but this is arguably both a surprise and welcomed addition, and I'm sure fans who remember Murphy will welcome this legendary screen presence with open arms. This is not the first though, and many other fanmade posters for TDKR also inspired by Struzan's works have come into the netscape months before, but I'm certainly impressed by the work and composition of this one, and I'm hoping that the actual poster released by Warner Bros. blows us away when it gets released! Next year, for the first time ever, 200 Super Sentai and 40 Kamen Riders unite one movie to bring the Japan "All-Star" team up movie of the new century! Tentatively titled "Super Hero Taisen" (Super Hero War), the movie, slated for a release sometime in 2012, will bring together forces

The Kamen Riders, beginning their legacy with 1971's Kamen Rider, has spawned 39 other shows after the initial series, with the current and 40th one being Kamen Rider Fourze, which is currently ongoing.

The Super Sentai brand, which started the original Super Sentai series Himitsu Sentai Goranger in 1975, has supplied fans with various forms of team and super robot adventures, which have amassed over 200 Sentai troops that include next year's Tokumei Sentai Gobuster.

Both products are the work and legacy of the late great Japanese manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, whose influence inspired many generations to look up to these heroes, and brought popularity to the sentai and kamen rider names. Confirmed to appear and reprise their roles are Masahiro Inoue as Kamen Rider Decade, Ryota Ozawa as Gokai Red, and the team of Rina Akiyama/ Naomi, Kenjiro Ishimaru/ Station Manager, and Momotaros from Kamen Rider Den-O! Rurouni Kenshin Live-Action Official Pics Released!

Following up on a first-look scan released a few days ago and via a post at Anime News Network, the staff and makers of next year's upcoming live action adaptation of "Rurouni Kenshin". Also known as "Samurai X" in the US and based on the manga and anime series of the same name created by Nobuhiro Watsuki, the movie will premiere on August, and will star Takeru Satoh of Kamen Rider Den-O fame as the legendary slasher Kenshin Himura himself, with Emi Takei playing his love interest Kamiya Kaoru, who is pictured below.

Rumor: Benicio del Toro is Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek 2?

I grew up a big Star Trek fan, and to this day, one of my all time favorite movies is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which cemented the reputation of the late Ricardo Montalban as the uber bad-ass villain Khan Noonien Singh, who returned to torment the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise and delivered a crucial blow in the form of Spock's valiant sacrifice to save his friends from the madman's suicide attack. Flash forward almost 30 years later, and that movie is still etched in the hearts of Trekkies around the world, and following the success of J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" reboot film, many are hopeful that "KHHHHAAAANNNN" would return in some form or another.

Well as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it. Rumors are flying around the netscape that actor Benicio del Toro was tapped by Abrams to play a new version of the genetically modified Khan in the rebooted universe, and just by looking at the actor and his resume, you know that he is a strong fit and candidate for the role. I do hope we get official confirmation soon, and I'm all for Del Toro to take up the mantle, he may just surprise us with his performance and give Chris Pine a reason to scream like William Shatner did here for Wrath of Khan:

Rumor: Watchmen 2 is really happening? Andy Kubert confirmed as artist.

Those of you who've read Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal work "Watchmen", guess what? Apparently, a sequel prequel comic book miniseries is actually in the works, and it's been confirmed that artist Andy Kubert (Batman, Flashpoint) would be attached to the project.

The news broke and supposedly got confirmed via Bleeding Cool, and aside from Kubert drawing, other artists and writers are supposedly attached as well, with big names like JMS and even co-creator Dave Gibbons himself possibly taking part in this rumored miniseries that predates the main Watchmen story. DC Comics has yet to confirm, but the story is trending around and being reported by other comic book news sites like Comic Book Resources and io9, adding a lot of speculation as to whether or not this pre-Watchmen series is really happening. It's still a rumor at this point, so time will tell for sure if this actually holds water.

Farewell, Gamepro...

Sad news came to me just a few minutes ago, and probably the wave of overwhelming nostalgia I'm feeling right now rides up there when EGM initially shut down operations the first time around.

Gamepro, one of the longest running video game magazines in existence, is shutting down operations for good in the US, showing signs of the times and the end of an era. The news, which hit the web instantaneously in sites like Venture Beat as soon as the publication posted the announcement, has sent ripples and shockwaves in the gaming community, and there are certainly a lot of mixed reactions to its sudden and surely inevitable demise. Beginning in 1989, the magazine was slowly going to shift from a monthly publication schedule to a quarterly one, but that doesn't seem to be the case any longer, as parent company IDG has formally announced it will shut down operations. Gamepro's website, which has been in operation for 13 years, will now be absorbed into PCWorld, and will take effect come December 5th.

As with all cease and desist operations, Gamepro's offices will be closed down, and people will be laid off and lose their jobs as a result. In the article by VentureBeat, the shutdown is described as the "creative success not falling in line with business success", and that can be attributed to the times and lack of push the publication industry has because of the influence and presence the internet generates today.

As a gamer and person who grew up in that generation, Gamepro was one of my initial sources for news, walkthroughs, tips, and tricks related to the world of video games. I used to buy a handful of issues back in the day, and I still have said copies stored and kept in my collection. Despite being out of touch with it in recent years, reading this bit of news now has weighed down heavily in my heart, and I feel for those who have remembered the magazine for its contributions to the video game news industry. It may have had its shortcomings compared to the likes of EGM, but it still delivered hot and potentially interesting news to gamers worldwide. Truly, the mag shall be missed. Here's a final salute in the form of an issue cover I had and remember well from the 90's. It was during the 90's console war era, and back then I had a Sega Genesis and played Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition, with this particular magazine serving as a guide to me. Playstation 3 updates to be PS Vita ready!

Those of you who own a Playstation 3 console and look forward to owning a Playstation Vita, better take heed of this news!

With the Japanese launch of the Vita just two weeks away, Sony has prepared gamers with PS3 units for the impending arrival of their newest portable system by releasing their latest system software update, Version 4.00, out in the interwebz. This allows the black monolith console to serve as a content management device for those who have a Vita, and much like its predecessor the Playstation Portable, all videos, music, save data, and files can be easily transferred back and forth by both devices.

Besides Vita compatibility, other features and settings have been given to PSN users and Playstation Plus subscribers. In my case, I just updated my firmware to 4.00, and am looking forward to connectivity between my PS3 and the Vita once I get my own personal unit! DC The New 52: Justice League #1 gets 5th Printing!

Looks like the relaunch paid off after all!

Via their own blog The Source, DC Comics has announced that Justice League #1, penned by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, has once again gone back to press, and will be now known as the first comic book in The New 52 line to receive five printings. With the fourth issue due just before the holidays in December, this marks a milestone event in relation to the publication's decision to relaunch their comic line, and their flagship team-up book featuring the likes of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman has done immensely well. Each reprint has featured a different cover since release, and one has to wonder how the fifth printing will look like! The Dark Knight Rises: New info surfaces about Bane and 6 minute prologue

New information via Rama Screen, also posted in Comic Book Movie and Enewsi, has surfaced online that reveals more detailed information on the role of Bane (Tom Hardy) is and how the 6 minute prologue will play out for The Dark Knight Rises. This is reportedly insider information, and the person who wishes to remain anonymous has seen the prologue that's going to be attached with 70mm IMAX screenings of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Until it's confirmed, take these bits of info as rumors for the meantime, but it sure is interesting to read about. Possible SPOILERS for those who wish to keep their minds, so if I were you, turn away from this post now.

Bane's role in The Dark Knight Rises:

"Nolan has significantly rewrote the story of Bane from the comics. He is raised by Ra’s al Ghul and his up bringing mirrors that of Bruce Wayne. It’s a mirror of Bruce, except it’s darker and twisted. Bane is trained to be an assassin for the League of Shadows. He kills political figures that are deemed unfit by the LOS. So he is a bit of a Che Guevara/ Jason Bourne type character. A revolutionary and an assassin. He comes to Gotham to start a revolution by revealing the cover up dealing with Harvey Dent and killing the Mayor, among other key political figures."

The Dark Knight Rises Prologue:

"It is one of the assassinations ordered by Ra’s al Ghul. A mind blowing action sequence set aboard the Hercules plane, involving some innovative camera work ala Inception hallway fight scene. Bane and his mercenaries hijack a military plane transporting a dictator of a country which is in unrest (think Saddam Hussein type figure). He successfully kills the leader, but makes some mistakes along the way and is unable to safely land the plane. Because of the resulting injuries from the accident, he has to undergo complicated surgeries and that is how he winds up with that scar down his neck and the need for the mask to numb the pain."

Take note, these details haven't been confirmed yet, but that is detailed information if I ever saw it, and it works along the overall plot that Christopher Nolan has built up since Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne's (Christian Bale) dark reflection of what he could have become if he followed Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Shadows will be Bane in TDKR, and how he breaks Batman completely in this movie will be interesting to see. That's pretty much a teaser alright. This Sunday marks the end of the first half of The Walking Dead Season 2, as AMC prepares to premiere the mid-season finale of their successful zombie TV Series. After what went down in the last few episodes, Rick Grimes and his group struggle to keep their residency in Hershel Greene's Farm, all the while contending with secrets and animosity that's running among themselves. Comic Book Movie has uploaded some pretty neat High-Res images from the latest issue of Empire Magazine spotlighting "The Dark Knight Rises", giving fans a look at what's to come in Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan's final Bat-flick! What you see below is Bane (Tom Hardy), who's ready and willing to take on Batman (Christian Bale), and the latter looks like he's not prepared for what the villain has in store for him!

Fan Made Awesomeness: G.I. Joe: Red Retrieval

"They fight for freedom wherever there's trouble". Fans love them, and that's why these awesome things are made by fans.

Via Comic Book Movie, here's a actual G.I. Joe movie that brought out the nostalgic geek in me, and sent waves of excitement down my spine. It's created by one Mark Cheng, and he did all this with just $2,500! Check it out!

G.I. Joe: Red Retreval

As seen in his introduction about the film at his own You Tube channel, the man proves he put a lot of effort and thought into this project:

This is the GI Joe movie I saw in my head more than 25 years ago. I watched the cartoons, read the comics, and collected the toys when I was a kid. Eventually I moved on from GI Joe but from that franchise came my love for war movies - Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Band of Brothers - and my deep respect for the armed services and the men and women who serve.

Through working on this film - a process that took a year and a half - I realized the significance that GI Joe played in my childhood. Batman works alone, X-men was about strength in diversity, Transformers was pure awesome robots. But GI Joe was about a team of heroes working together, taking care of one another, never giving up, and staying until the fight was won. That's what I saw in my head, kept in my heart, and what I've tried to put into this film. As adults we've lost some of our innocence and, tragically, some of our idealism. We know heroes don't dodge bullets by doing cartwheels. Sometimes they get hurt, sometimes they don't come home. But under layers of dirt, grime, and blood, the hero is still there and he still sacrifices. And it's under those same layers of dirt and blood, that the spirit of GI Joe will always live.

The other thing I wanted to capture is that feeling from when I was 8 years old lying the floor with my action figures. I'd line up my GI Joe figures next to my Star Wars figures next to my He-Man figures and next to my Autobot Transformers. It didn't matter that the toys were of a different scale, possessed inexplicable powers, came from different brands, or lived in different universes. The ONLY things that mattered was that Good was about to defeat Evil, and that it was going to be SOOOO AWESOMEEEE.

So in a way, this is not the GI Joe movie I saw in my head 25 years ago. The film started that way, grew up like I did, got dirty like the world around us, but finds itself once again like the inner kid we all have within us.
